Irish Consulate and Chicago Gaelic Games visit CPS.
Enthusiastic students try hurling
The Consulate paid a fun visit to Chicago’s Bernhard Moos Elementary School on Monday 02 nd June to speak with students about Ireland and its culture.
Vice Consul Nicholas Michael gave a presentation on Ireland and St. Patrick, followed by a Gaelic Games and Irish dance demonstration (and lessons!) by Colm Egan, Gaelic Games Development Officer and Katie Fitzpatrick, an Irish dancing instructor.
Mr Egan demonstrated Gaelic Games: hurling and Gaelic football. Students had a go at both, with volunteers learning some of the skills for each sport.
Ms Fitzpatrick demonstrated Irish dancing and taught students a basic Irish jig. The day finished with questions and answers where the students demonstrated a very good knowledge of St. Patrick and the annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Chicago! Thank you to the staff and students at Moos Elementary for hosting the Consulate; it was a pleasure to meet such enthusiastic and engaged students.
Also, thank you Colm Egan and Katie Fitzpatrick for demonstrating hurling, Gaelic football, and Irish dance, and to Consulate Intern Lauren McKee for assisting with the visit. For more information on Gaelic Games in Chicago, check out www.chicagoirishsports.com.
